Why design for wellbeing in Offices?

  • People spend approximately 90% of their time indoors which means their indoor environments are crucial to their health, wellbeing and general happiness.

  •  The two biggest expenditures for any organisation are places and people, with people accounting for 90% of the lifetime costs of a building occupation.

  • There is clear evidence that productivty gains of between 8-11% can be achieved from improved indoor air quality.

Some of my favourite excerpts from the Health, Wellbeing and Productivity in Offices report

In a commercial sense, staff costs (including salaries and benefits) typically account for about 90% of business operating costs. Therefore, what may appear a modest improvement in employee health or productivity, can have a huge financial implication for employers – one that is many times larger than any other financial savings associated with an efficiently designed and operated building.

Costs of ill-health vary by sector and country, and are rarely comparable, but the impact is clear:

• The annual absenteeism rate in the US is 3% per employee in the private sector, and 4% in the public sector, costing employers $2,074 and $2,502 per employee per year respectively2

• Poor mental health specifically costs UK employers £30 billion a year through lost production, recruitment and absence3

• The aggregate cost to business of ill-health and absenteeism in Australia is estimated at $7 billion per year, while the cost of ‘presenteeism’ (not fully functioning at work because of medical conditions) is estimated to be A$26 billion4.

Why use us?

For Offices:

  • We have a fundamental understanding of start-up businesses and the importance of maximising every dollar spent.

  • Affordable – low overheads as we work remotely and from shared office spaces. We also know how to stretch a dollar.

  • We’re able to translate the big picture research to the small scale fitouts. Our understanding of green building and wellbeing design allows these principles to be creatively applied to small business – getting the rewards without the expenditure.

  • Branding experts – We use the fitout as a visual representation of the brand itself. This helps reinforce key brand concepts to all involved (staff and client attraction/retention).
